In the season opener for both teams a pitching duel broke out. Veteran Dave Barnes vs. 2005 Tier 1 pitcher of the year Adam Oattes. Through the first 3 innings the game was tied 0-0, with Oattes not giving up any baserunners and Barnes just 2 hits. In the top of the 4th, the Cardinals finally broke through when Felix Septimo got a hold of one, and planted it in the trees for a 2 run shot. Then Mike Disalvo stepped up and hit a home run to left field for "back to back" home runs and a 3-0 lead. From there, the Cardinals could only muster 1 hit off of reliever Geoff Magnus but 3 runs would be all the Cardinals would need. Magnus hit a solo home run in the 5th and then the Brewers stranded the bases loaded in the 6th and scored once in the 7th on a Joe Beelen RBI single but Barnes got out of the jam like he did all night in a masterfull piece of pitching by the Cardinals ace. On the plus side for the Brewers, 3 of their rookies got their first NCBL hits, Matt Battig, James Marshall, and Craig Chaput all hit singles. Much better than all the crappy veterans could do, other than Joe and Punk!!!!
Player of the Game : Dave Barnes, 7 IP, 10 K's, 2 earned runs, and the
win.
